Suspect Dead, Officer in Critical After Shooting in Atlantic City

The ordeal began Saturday at 2:34 a.m. when two Atlantic City police officers on patrol spotted a robbery in progress near the Caesars Atlantic City parking garage on Arkansas Avenue, officials said.
Officials say two Atlantic City police officers left their patrol vehicle and approached a group of six men. At least one of those men allegedly then opened fire, striking one of the officers. The other officer returned fire and struck one of the men, according to police. The other suspects fled in different directions, officials said.

The suspect who was shot was found about a block and a half away on Missouri and Pacific avenues where he collapsed and died from his injuries.
The officer who was struck underwent surgery and is currently in critical condition.

Police later located and identified all five persons of interest after viewing surveillance video taken a few minutes before the shooting. An investigation revealed three of those persons of interest were actually victims of an armed robbery committed by the deceased suspect and two of his accomplices, according to officials. The three robbery victims were detained but later released after cooperating with police, according to officials.
Investigators have not yet revealed the identities of the three robbery suspects.
