Clash between herdsmen and farmers ended by the police
The  new Assistant Inspector General of
Police in charge of Zone 9 headquarters in Umuahia Abia State, Yerima
Fyarah, has said that the zone was making concerted efforts towards
ending the lingering clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the zone.
He pointed out that the police
extracted assurances from the host communities involved in the clashes
to live peacefully with the herdsmen, adding that the police will want a
situation where any part of the country will become hostile for people
from other tribes. The AIG who spoke in Umuahia, the Abia
State capital, stated that the Zone 9 was planning to hold seminars and
workshops to address the reoccurring clashes and also sensitize the
people on the need to live peacefully with one another.
He added that police operatives in the
zone were always on red alert and willing to act on useful information
that could lead to the bursting of suspected criminal hideouts across
the zone.Fyarah pointed out that he had mapped
out strategies for fighting crimes in zones to ensure that states under
his command were peaceful for all Nigerians to live and do their
legitimate business.
The AIG stated that his officers were
willing to partner other security agencies in fighting kidnapping and
other criminal offence.
He said, “I believe that effective
policing cannot be an inclusive assignment. So we want to partner the
general public through the media.
“We are calling on the people to always
give us information concerning the strange activities in their area
without delay because delay could be dangerous.
“We are working hard to reposition the
police force and we have warned our officers to avoid illegal arrest and
detention, harassment and intimidation and we are ready to discipline
officers involved in such unprofessional conduct.
“I plead with every member of the
public to endeavour to corporate with the police in the discharge of
their duties. Nobody should be afraid of giving the police information
about criminal activities in their area because no responsible police
officer will expose his source of information,” he said.
